Your Furniture's Not Dead

I said, "How come we don't write notes to each other? Upholsterers. We're the only ones who see the insides of this furniture. We should have so many inside jokes and things we could write." You know, "This guy was a jerk. He wouldn't pay for this."

J read an article a while back about Jack White and his first band, The Upholsterers.  He and his band mate were actually upholsterers.    I found a similar interview on the NPR blog and another from The Believer.  They are entertaining if you are interested.  You can read about how he started writing poetry on furniture he upholstered and then later hid records inside.  Can you imagine finding a record inside your furniture? Crazy.

Anyway, J and I are both fans.  Leave it to me to take a really cool and artistic suggestion from Jack White and turn it in to something totally geeky (see my note above).   We decided not to leave our names in case whoever finds it comes after us for the amount of staples we used.  Seriously.  This sofa is stapled everywhere.  I scribbled a quick note elementary school style and tucked it inside before we closed up the back.  I wish we had found a little note like this when we stripped it down.  I would have loved to know a little bit about the people who owned the sofa before us.  Think anyone will find it down the road?

  1. Nice fabric. I'd like to see a full shot of the sofa. We have a couch that needs a new slip cover. I wonder if I could manage to make one. It's a lot of expensive fabric to waste if I can't pull it off.
Your note is a neat idea. I hope someone finds it someday.

    1. It's almost done, Karin! We have a few finishing touches to do and I'm hoping to take some completed pictures this weekend. And you can pull it off. It just takes a little perseverance.

  2. How funny. Your upholstery is going really well. Kudos to you. I love finding notes inside old patterns, but I guess it is not quite the same.

    1. I'd love to find a note inside a pattern, too. That's what I really like about secondhand things- that they have a story.

  3. Cool idea!

I threw out half a dozen messages in bottles about 25 years ago. I'm still kinda hoping that somebody will find them one day and write to me...even though I have moved address, they could still find me.

  4. Secret notes are the best. I own all my grandma's sewing things and sometimes I find little notes stuck in things, they're just technical stuff like when she bought something or children's measurements but it's still fun to see her handwriting.

  5. That's a wonderful idea! I would love to find things like that in any furniture, that would probably love him more, if possible.

  6. This is all news to me but so cool! Hopefully someday someone will find your note that would be neat. I have a chair I bought so long ago as a project and have yet to re do it now I want to open it up and see if there a note!

  7. That is so many kinds of cool I don't know where to start! I think I'll start doing something similar with used patterns I sell on ebay or something... It gives the item a little "context" or something...

Off to go listen to Jack White's interview... When I saw his name on the quote, I thought "noo... can't be the same one!"
